Change Pathways

Counseling Tools for Every Phase of Change

The Dangers of Unstructured Counsel

People need more than advice.

They need someone who understands the biblical process of change and how to guide others through it.

Without a clear and consistent biblical process, counseling easily becomes:

  • Scattered
  • Inconsistent
  • Personality-driven
  • Emotionally exhausting

Change Pathways provides clarity.

  • If you’re committed to offering counsel that brings true and lasting hope—hope rooted in Jesus Christ and the authority of His Word—then I can’t recommend Biblical Counselors Society enough. BCS stands firm on biblical truth while equipping you to serve others with wisdom, grace and conviction.

Two Biblical Pathways

G.R.A.C.E. Pathways — For Suffering & Sorrows

When the primary issue is suffering, G.R.A.C.E. Pathways lead people toward honest lament, trust, and endurance.

G.R.A.C.E. Pathways equip you to help sufferers:

  • Receive God’s comfort
  • Rest in God’s wisdom and love
  • Respond with Spirit-empowered obedience

God uses suffering and sorrow to refine His people as they move through this biblical process:

G – Grieve
Grieve and lament honestly before the Lord.

R – Receive
Receive, rather than resist, God’s comfort through His Word, Spirit, and people.

A – Accept
Accept what God has allowed in his wisdom and love.

C – Commit
Commit to submit to God’s will in all things

E – Entrust
Entrust yourself to God with joyful obedience that places outcomes, fears, and uncertainty into God’s hands.

All of the tools inside G.R.A.C.E. Pathways are aligned with each step of this process, equipping you to guide others toward faithful endurance with clarity, consistency, patience, and compassion.

G.O.S.P.E.L. Pathways — For Sin & Sanctification

When the primary issue is personal sin, G.O.S.P.E.L. Pathways lead people toward genuine repentance and transformation.

G.O.S.P.E.L. Pathways equip you to help sinners:

  • Reorient their hearts
  • Renew their minds
  • Reform their behavior

God transforms people struggling with sin as they move through this process:

G – Grapple
Grapple with God’s truth about your heart

O – Own
Own your sin with godly sorrow rather than making excuses and blame-shifting

S – Sever
Sever your allegiance to the deceitful desires that fuel sinful habits

P – Pivot
Turn back to God, treasuring His glory instead of your own

E – Embed
Embed God’s Word in your heart and mind, trusting God’s wisdom instead of your own

L – Live
Live out new patterns of life empowered by the Spirit, taking up God’s ways instead of your own

All of the tools inside G.O.S.P.E.L. Pathways are aligned with each step of this process, equipping you to guide others toward lasting change in a clear, consistent, faithful, and effective way.

Is Counseling Really This Straightforward?

The Bible reveals that change follows a clear process. And, we’ve outlined that for you.

But, just because the change process is linear, that does not mean the counseling process is linear.

This is due to 2 primary factors:

  • People often rebel against the change process
  • Change happens on different levels at different times (progressive sanctification)

So, there are times when you have to reassess the situation and revisit previous phases of change to ensure you are guiding people faithfully.

But, that does not alter the change process itself.

That’s why Change Pathways provides you with clear counseling models, not simplistic formulas.

Don’t People Struggle with Sin AND Suffering?

It is very common for people to experience sin and suffering at the same time.

In that case, how do you know which pathway to choose?

Here’s a good rule of thumb:

  • When suffering is NOT the result of personal sin (ex: cancer, death of a spouse) — choose G.R.A.C.E. Pathways and guide others toward faithful endurance rooted in God’s character and promises.
  • When suffering IS the result of personal sin (ex: divorce due to adultery or addiction) — choose G.O.S.P.E.L. Pathways and guide others toward lasting change rooted in God’s holiness and compassion.

Sufferers may also need to be corrected if they respond to their sorrow in sinful ways. But, work through the G.R.A.C.E. Pathways first. Why?

  • Because they still call for faithful endurance while emphasizing compassion and mercy in view of great suffering.

And, sinners may also need to be comforted due to suffering they are experiencing. But, work the G.O.S.P.E.L. Pathway first. Why?

  • Because they rightly prioritize repentance without neglecting compassion.

This approach guards against distraction and keeps you in step with Scripture.

  • Biblical Counselors Society provides a wonderful place for collaboration with like-minded people and a wealth of powerful counseling tools! I highly recommend it.

How People Use Change Pathways

Change Pathways are NOT programs.

They are counseling models that outline the biblical process of change — designed to be used flexibly in real conversations.

You’ll learn to:

  • Identify the nature of the struggle
  • Choose the appropriate pathway
  • Guide people patiently through each phase of change

This ensures that you are not counseling off-the-cuff.

Instead, you are counseling with clear objectives and tools tailored for those objectives.

A Case Example: Despair

Primary Issue: Sin (prideful rejection of God’s character and promises)
Selected Pathway: G.O.S.P.E.L.

1 — Grapple
Grapple with the truth that despair interprets pain apart from God’s faithful love

2 — Own
Own the sin of hopelessness that forgets God’s mercy and turns inward

3 — Sever
Sever the lies that deny God’s nearness, goodness, power, and care

4 — Pivot
Turn from self-reliance to dependent trust in the God of hope

5 — Embed
Renew the thoughts with God’s promises, presence, and unfailing love

6 — Live Out
Replace despair with worship, gratitude, and persevering hope
